Evil in The World...Hiding and Seeking

There is something about jury duty which can solidify within one - either ones' firm foundation or a let loose a miasma of conflicting thoughts like snakes hissing to the world. I would guess that few people doubt the actual existence of evil. Pinning down concrete examples of this however can be confusing to one given to reflection and contemplation of truth whether it be the subjective - aren't most fitting this category if we are honest ? - or some more sublime form born of our mutual collective angst and bliss.
As a juror of peers I seem to sense I am facing down "evil" here but pinning down the source and naming that which appears a "mystery wrapped in an enigma" will take perhaps a more discerning mind than I possess. Obviously there can be no details at all given in this situation due to my oath taken. But a deeper understanding of the process playing out here cries out to consider the root of it all.
Is it actually a concsious thing? I would guess NOT in many instances. I have to wonder just how intentional the hurt I am seeing was, and if and when, the realization and true acceptance of such pain inflicted upon true innocence will sink in. Perhaps never I fear. Moreover this (to name it) "evil", it seems to me, is more like a creeping virulence we can often associate with corporeal existence.
So many I am sure will not extoll such a vague approach to this subject. I apologize sincerely for any lack of depth I exhibit - I have no real choice - but it has me thinking...
