What is the meaning of it all? A friend asked me quite innocently a few weeks back. It took me aback as I realized he meant this literally. He was asking why are we here in this plane of being - involved on so many levels with each other - what is the purpose…
Well the next day I got back to him with this:
We are here first and foremost to care about each other as fellow sentient beings. To have compassion…yes that's right lovers and haters of all the various ???-isms out there available to react to….compassion and willingness to show forgiveness should be our FIRST action or reaction to the travails life foists upon us. To show such kindness (especially to ourselves) should not be the rarity. Only from the kindness we extend to ourselves can spring that which we owe each other as fellow terrestrial wayfarers. Because without this sense of our own goodness and purpose (our source if you will) the rest of our lives will eventually resemble the shamble it must inevitably become.
We are here to learn, whether that be by studying in ivory towers or by doing the grunt work of our daily lessons. From this learning the ideal is to gain a greater level of passion which should lead to a renewed compassion - a vital quality which has been known to fail one just when the chips are down and it is most needed.
Witness the human devastation of Gaza and there is but one small contemporary example. So all of you folks who might happen across these words…what's the meaning of it all?
